Low Tone

We took Melanie to the Cache Children's Pediatric Rehabilitation Center yesterday and had a very good appointment. Melanie's therapist was Breeann, and I just think she is great. She gave us a few things to work on with Melanie.
Some things she told us to work on,(these are word for word from the paper she gave me, just so I don't forget).
Rice Sock Positioning- position Melanie on her RIGHT side and place toys on the RIGHT. This will help to reshape her head. (during play and naps when supervised, perform as much as possible, GOAL is 7-8 hours per day minimum). Pick up rice sock, shake rice to the bottom, and fold top over. Roll pillowcase over top of each rice sock to form a sling. Tall sock behind her on her left side even with the top of her shoulder, short sock under her right armpit. She should be positioned on the most prominent spot of her head.
Also pay attention to where the pressure is on her head during feedings.
(her head is slightly misshapen, I think she said by 10mm, so hopefully by keeping her off her right side, it will help and make it so that she won't need a helmet)
LEFT Football Hold(after diaper changes or before feedings) - Face Melanie away from you, slip your right arm in between her legs up to your elbow, lay her down sideways, stretch with your left hand at her left ear. Facilitate right ear to right shoulder. Hold & support her head to guide a gentle stretch. (hold for 20-30 seconds and repeat 3 times... each diaper change or before each feeding 5x/day).
(she has about 10-15% tightness in her neck on her left side)
Joint Compression - perform both through the arms and legs. Straighten the limb and press upward through it from hand/foot to simulate the pressures she would feel during standing or tummy time.
(she doesn't put any weight on her feet when you hold her up to stand and so this will help her strengthen those leg and arm muscles)
Tummy Time - perform on an incline to make it easier for her initially. Goal: 20 min. total/day.
(cannot lift her head at all laying flat, or if you pull her up with her hands while she is on her back, her head just falls back)
And then she attached a checklist so that we can check them off each day.
So, it was a very good appointment, and just little things we need to work on to help her gain strength. We go back in three weeks and they do measurements again to see if things have improved.
I thought she would be great through her appointment, she was just fed, and had a nap, but she cried the whole appointment, except for when Rob held her looking out the window. She always calms down when we are outside.
